CTO for ETX Systems Recognized for Innovative Upgrader Development

CALGARY, AB –  Dr. Wayne Brown, Chief Technology Officer for ETX Systems, was named this year's recipient of the Innovation in Oil Sands Research prize.  The award, sponsored by Syncrude Canada Ltd.,  is offered annually by the Alberta Science and Technology Leadership Foundation.  He was awarded the prize for his development work over the past decade of the IYQ Upgrading technology.

The announcement was made October 28, 2011 at the ASTech gala.  Dr. Brown had already been informed of his selection as an ASTech Honouree, a designation given the finalists in each category, but he only learned of his selection as the winner at the gala.

"It came as a big surprise", said Dr. Brown.  "Although awards such as these are not the motivation for taking on these research challenges, it is certainly rewarding to be recognized by a distinguished group of your peers.  In technology development there are highs and lows, and the awards gala was certainly a high.  It is a time to sit back and celebrate the success.  However, our group will be back to the task at hand again on Monday."

The Alberta Science and Technology (ASTech) Leadership Foundation was created to celebrate and promote the achievements of Alberta’s scientific and technological communities. The foundation is a private, not-for-profit society supported by patron organizations from the private and public sectors. Patrons come from diverse industries and backgrounds that include business, government, research and education. All patrons share the same goal of promoting and honouring Alberta’s world-class innovation in science and technology. ASTech is the premiere organization in Alberta that works to generate widespread public awareness for these worthy achievements in science and technology.  For more information see
